As the volume of spam rises, it's no surprise to see Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and individuals react by using filters to differentiate between wanted and unwanted emails. But filters are not an exact science so this means many wanted emails (aka permission-based emails) get blocked. These types of blocked emails are often referred to as "false positives". Filters have a long way to go, so what can you do to maximize the odds of your email reaching its destination?

Barrier #1: Suspicious Message Content
There are many trigger words or key words that are prevalent in spam. You'll want to make sure you avoid them in the subject line and in the email itself!

Barrier #2: Ineffective Email Broadcasting Methods
Are you sending high volumes of emails from your own email client or the wrong type of software? Keep in mind that ISPs monitor unusually high email volumes and/or bounces. If they suspect you are spamming they can put a block on your emails or worse yet, they can blacklist you.

Tip: Work with vendors like cardcommunications who have good relationships with ISPs and who use professional email marketing software that follows all the best practices for permission-based email marketing.

Barrier #3: Recipient Filters
In addition to filters and blocks at the ISP level, it's also common for individuals to set up their own email filtering systems. These filters can be set up in various ways - one common way being by the "from" address in the email itself. If the "from" name is not in the individual's address book, the email is automatically flagged as "bulk" or "spam" and often routed to a different folder that may never be read.

Tip: Include an "add me to your address book" at the top of your email…like we do. The case for permission-based emails is more important than ever. Having a relationship with your audience is key.
